Carolina Marín has shared an update on her social media confirming that she has undergone surgery on her right knee for the third time, the second operation since the injury she suffered during the semifinals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

In a video published on her Instagram and Facebook profiles, the Spanish athlete shared that she underwent surgery on Monday after months of pain. “Yesterday I went back into the operating room again. The third time on my right knee,” she said. “I’ve been dealing with pain for many months. I was given several options, one was injections and the other was surgery, and I ended up deciding to do it as soon as possible because what I prioritise most today is quality of life and health.”

Marín explained that the pain had been particularly sharp in the inner meniscus and that the outer meniscus was also treated in the procedure.

According to the medical team, the Olympic champion’s rehabilitation period is expected to last around six weeks.

As for expectations, I’m very happy because the doctors who operated on me have given me a very positive assessment,” she said. “Now it’s time to get through the first week on crutches. They’ve told me the total recovery will be six weeks. I’m eager to gradually regain muscle strength.”

The video also gave fans a deeper insight into the emotional challenges Marín has been facing in recent months. She admitted that her knee issues had been one of the most difficult aspects in a difficult period, something she had previously mentioned in earlier videos.

“These last few months have been quite tough for me, and one of the main reasons was my knee,” she explained. “In the last videos I shared with you, I told you I wasn’t in a good place mentally. I think now you’ll understand one of the main reasons why everything has been much more complicated.”

Her video comes after a short break from social media during the Christmas period, in which the seven times European Champion stepped away from her platforms to focus on herself and spend more time with her family.

“I don’t want to rule anything out in my life right now,” she said. “I want to focus on and prioritise my knee. I have six weeks ahead of me. I want to approach it in the best possible way – staying positive, also being aware of what I have.”

Marín also wanted to thank her fans for their support during a challenging period in her career. “That’s why I want to thank everyone for the affection you constantly give me and all the messages of support.”

The last time Marín competed was at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she suffered the knee injury that has kept her away from the tournaments since then. The next big date on the calendar is the 2026 European Championships, which will take place in Marín’s hometown, Huelva, at the sports complex named after her.

It remains to be seen whether she will be ready to compete. For now, the priority is to recover, hoping that the coming weeks bring positive news.
