Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje have made a dream return to the tour, winning the mixed doubles title at the SANDS CHINA LTD Macau Open 2025. It was their first tournament back together in over a year, and they left Macau as champions. Denmark also claimed another medal thanks to Line Christophersen, who finished as runner-up in women’s singles, taking home the silver.
Christiansen has only recently returned from a one-year ban, and the Danish pair started their comeback at the Super 300 event in Macau, beginning all the way from the qualification rounds. Slowly but steadily, the Danes found their rhythm. They reached the main draw, battled through some tough three-game matches—and had a walkover in the quarterfinals—to reach the final.
“We’ve just been playing better and better,” said Christiansen after the win.
In the final, they faced Malaysia’s Jimmy Wong/Lai Pei Jing, who had also gathered some impressive wins throughout over strong, seeded pairs. It wasn’t an easy match, particularly with the conditions on court.
“It wasn’t easy with the water dripping on the court,” Christiansen explained, referring to the condensation issues in the venue. “It was all about being focused, and then we had the injury.”
The Danes had won the first game 21-13 and were leading in the second when Bøje slipped and sprained her ankle. From that moment on, she struggled with her movement and Christiansen had to step up. Knowing they needed to finish the match in straight games, the Danes gave it their all. “We tried to dig a little bit deeper. We knew that we needed to win this one in two sets,” Christiansen added.
They did just that. They secured the second game 21-16 to claim the title. Christiansen credited their defence as the key factor, “That’s what made the difference.”
It’s a great achievement for the duo in their first event back, especially after over a year away from international competition. “We did not expect to win this tournament when we started it but we are so happy and proud that we could deliver a title this week,” said Christiansen.
“It’s so nice to be back together on court,” Bøje added. “I’m really proud of him and happy with our game.”
“That’s surreal actually,” Christiansen said on their comeback title win.
Christophersen wins silver
Denmark also had success in women’s singles, with Line Christophersen finishing off a strong week by reaching the final. The Dane faced a tough opponent, no other than top seed Chen Yu Fei, and despite pushing in both games, she lost 17-21 17-21.
“I think the key was to not be too aggressive, not to attack all the time,” Christophersen said after the match. “I just have to be patient.”
The runner-up finish in this Super 300 event is still a great result for Christophersen, this being her second podium finish of the year, and a confidence boost heading into the World Championships in Paris in just three weeks.
