49 Matches, 1 Epic Start – 2025 European Championships
08/04/25 23:09

49 matches played across three courts over a span of 12.5 hours. That, and much more, has already happened on the opening day of the 2025 European Championships.
While many of the top stars had a rest day, plenty of others were in action.
Before we get to some of the day’s biggest results, we want to highlight the impressive surroundings the players are enjoying here in Horsens. The entire setup around the court has been incredibly well-executed by Badminton Denmark and the many volunteers.

On court, we’ve seen so many entertaining and thrilling encounters that it’s impossible to mention them all here. But you can find all of today’s results here.

One match worth highlighting is Rory Easton/Lizzie Tolman’s victory over Ruben Garcia/Lucia Rodriguez from Spain. In a back-and-forth battle, the English pair came through with an impressive 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 win.

Maiken Fruergaard is playing her final international tournament before hanging up her racket at just 29 years old. In her last European Championships, she’s teaming up with debutant Natasja P. Anthonisen. In their first-round match, they faced Anna Kupca/Jekaterina Romanova from Austria. The Danes were in control throughout, winning comfortably 21-10, 21-14. After the match, they said they are taking it one match at a time - but their goal is to bring home a medal.

Mateusz Golas, the 2024 European Junior Champion from Poland, received a wildcard for the Championships. He put in a strong performance against Gustav Bjorkler from Sweden. After splitting the first two games 21-19, 19-21, the Swede proved too strong in the decider, taking it 21-10.

The biggest upset of the day came from Lucas Renoir and Mael Cattoen, who surprisingly knocked out 5th seeds Andreas Søndergaard and Jesper Toft with a 12-21, 21-19, 21-18 win. The two French players were visibly thrilled after the match:
“We are so happy right now, just so happy about our performance.”
It didn’t look like an upset in the making after the Danes dominated the first game 21-12.
“We were just lifting so much, and they were attacking very good, so it was difficult for us. But we changed it, and we didn’t give them the attack easily.”

Tomorrow, several seeded players will enter the competition, and we can look forward to even more top-level badminton from Europe’s finest.
As always, all matches are streamed live and free at BadmintonEurope.tv
