Heading into today’s semifinals, four matches featured European participation — and as we now look ahead to the finals, four European singles players/doubles pairs remain in the tournament.
The day began with a victory for Christine Busch and Mads Vestergaard, securing their place in the mixed doubles final. You can read more about that match here.
Next on court was Toma Popov, who delivered a convincing performance against Chi Yu Jen, winning 21–19, 21–15. In tomorrow’s final, he will face his younger brother, Christo.
Christo Popov booked his spot in the final in the last match of the day, defeating Lin Chun-Yi from Chinese Taipei 21–10, 18–21, 21–18.
This will be the second time the two brothers face each other in a final in Germany. Last year, they met in the final of the Hylo Open, where Christo Popov emerged victorious in commanding fashion.
The tournament’s biggest surprise, however, has been William Villeger and Julien Maio. The French pair have gone all the way from qualification to tomorrow’s final. Today, they defeated Chiu/Wang from Chinese Taipei. Wang, a two-time Olympic champion, makes the French duo’s performance this week even more remarkable.
