Canada Open begins!
01/07/25 09:54

After a great week in the United States, the BWF World Tour continues in Canada. The YONEX Canada Open 2025 is a Super 300 tournament, and many Europeans are ready to make their mark as the shuttles start flying at the Markham Pan Am Centre.

Many of the same athletes who competed at last week’s US Open will be participating again, some hoping to seize the opportunities they missed, while others aim to build on last week’s success.

Canadian headliners
Headlining the event are home favourites Michelle Li and Brian Yang. Li, seeded first, will try to reclaim the title she last won in 2022. Yang, seeded fourth, impressed with a second-place finish at the US Open. Will the home-crowd advantage help him reach the podium again, or will the long week of competition take its toll? We will find out this week!

Women's singles
Among the European contenders, Polina Buhrova and Line Christophersen are both seeded and eager to go even further than last week, when both finished in third place after semifinal exits. Other European challengers include Tereza Švábíková, Vivien Sandorházi, Amalie Schulz, Yvonne Li, and European Junior Champion Kaloyana Nalbantova.

Men's singles
In men's singles, strong names feature in the draw. Arnaud Merklé, fresh off a win at the Denmark STATE Challenge, is joined by Joakim Oldorff, a former European Championships bronze medallist, as well as Belgium's Julien Carraggi. Denmark's Magnus Johannesen and Mads Christophersen, who are now coached by Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, are looking to make a statement at the World Tour after playing in the European Circuit in the last tournaments.

Men's doubles
In men’s doubles, the Grimley brothers are seeded third, while Denmark’s overnight sensations Boe/Kjær, finalists at the Super 500 Thailand Open, are seeded seventh. The French duo Mael Cattoen/Lucas Renoir are seeded eighth and will face the Kral brothers from Czechia in a thrilling all-European first-round clash.

Women's Doubles
In women’s doubles, Ukraine’s Kantemyr/Buhrova, seeded fourth, hope to bounce back after a first-round exit last week. The Danish pair Natasja Anthonisen/Amalie Cecilie Kudsk will play only their second tournament together and look to gain valuable experience.

Mixed doubles
In mixed doubles, last week’s surprise champions Rasmus Espersen/Amalie Cecilie Kudsk are seeded fifth and aiming to ride their momentum. England’s Callum Hemming/Estelle Van Leeuwen are seeded fourth, while France’s Julien Maio/Léa Palermo are seeded seventh.

It promises to be an exciting week of badminton action. These are just some of the European players to watch. Click here to watch the full order of play
