Day 3 at the YONEX Canada Open was a tough one for the remaining Europeans, with only five pairs and one player remaining, but chances are still there for European success in Canada.

Garcia/Rodriguez’s run continues
After having beaten the number one seeds, Ruben Garcia/Lucia Rodriguez took on Denmark’s Kristoffer Kolding/Mette Werge in the round of 16. It was the second time the two pairs met this year, the first being at the Polish Open 2025 in the semifinals, where the Danes were victorious in straight games. This time it was a closely contested battle in three games, where the Spaniards managed to edge a victory in the final game, 22-20. After fending off a match point at 19-20, they secured the win.

Today, Garcia/Rodriguez face sixth-seeded American pair Presley Smith/Jennie Gai, last week’s bronze medallists. With the Spaniards' win over the number one seeds in the first round, their confidence will hopefully be high in their ability to beat another seeded pair. It will be an exciting clash for sure!

In another mixed doubles clash, fourth seeds Callum HemmingEstelle Van Leeuwen face off against the Canadian pair Kevin Lee/Josephine Wu.

Marvin Seidel/Thuc Nguyen meet the third-seeded pair from Chinese Taipei, Hsu Yin-Hui/Chen Cheng Kuan, who are also both in the quarterfinals in men’s and women’s doubles, respectively, speaking to their high level as players. It will be a tough hill to climb for Seidel/Nguyen against the 19th-best pair in the world, but another thrilling match to be sure.

Women’s singles
Amalie Schulz, the only European singles player left, is taking on Indian player Shriyanshi Valishetty. The two have played on two previous occasions at International Series competitions. Valishetty won both of those matches; however, both were in three games, giving hope that today could be Schulz’s chance to strike back and get her ticket to the semifinals.

Men’s doubles
Seventh seeds William Kryger Boe/Christian Faust Kjær and Christopher Grimley/Matthew Grimley, seeded third, both face pairs from Chinese Taipei, who have been dominating the tournament this week and last week, claiming every single medal at the US Open in the men’s doubles category.

Hopefully, the two seeded European pairs will be able to withstand the pressure and consistency coming from their opponents, keep their composure, and secure a European medal in this week’s tournament in the men’s doubles category.
