There will be Danes in the semifinals tomorrow at the SANDS CHINA LTD Macau Open 2025. Line Christophersen delivered a solid win in her quarterfinal match, and Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje continue their comeback by securing a podium finish—although without stepping on court today, due to a walkover.
Japan’s Yuta Watanabe/Hina Osawa withdrew before their match against the Danes due to Watanabe being injured. Christiansen/Bøje have previously played exciting matches against Watanabe when he was partnered with Arisa Higashino, so it would have been interesting to see how today’s match would have played out.
Still, it’s a podium finish for the Danish duo in their first tournament back together in over a year. Tomorrow they’ll face top seeds Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei, who have won both of their previous matches. The Malaysian duo are ranked third in the world and last played the Danes just before Christiansen’s ban. If the Danes manage to get past them, it would be a huge win; otherwise, it would still be a strong result with a podium finish in their comeback.
Line Christophersen delivered a strong performance today, defeating Japan’s Hina Akechi in just 32 minutes. The Dane was always ahead, even having a run of eight consecutive points in the first game, to take the win 21-7 21-11. A quick match like that is definitely good for saving energy, especially heading into the semifinals.
This result guarantees Christophersen a podium finish, her second this year, following the US Open in June. This is already an improvement from last year, where she had just one. It could become even better if she reaches the final.
Tomorrow, she will face sixth seed Riko Gunji. They’ve never played before, but the Japanese player is ranked ten spots above Christophersen and has had some strong results recently, including a bronze medal at the Japan Open. On the other side of the draw, Chen Yu Fei and Lin Hsiang Ti will clash in the other women’s singles semifinal match.
