Czechia wrapped up their Sudirman Cup 2025 campaign with a brave display against Canada but ultimately fell short in a 1–4 defeat. Despite what the scoreline might imply, several matches were tightly contested, with Czechia showing flashes of quality against the Pan American champions.
The lone win for the European side came in Men’s Doubles, where Jan and Ondřej Král delivered a confident and composed performance to defeat Jason Lai and Nyl Yakura in straight games, 21–9 21–14. The Czech pair dominated from the start, giving their team a much-needed lift to go home with in the fifth and final match of the tie and the competition.
Earlier, Jan Louda came close to upsetting Brian Yang, taking the first game 21–17. However, Yang — silver medallist at the DAIHATSU Indonesia Masters 2024 and winner of the YONEX Canadian International Challenge 2024 — responded with greater control in the second and third games, closing them out 21–17 and 21–13.
Tereza Švábíková featured in both the Mixed and Women’s Doubles, alongside Ondřej Král in the Mixed Doubles, they pushed Kevin Lee and Emily Zhang close in both games (23–21, 21–18). In the Women’s Doubles, paired with Kateřina Zuzáková, the Czech duo couldn’t match the Canadian pair’s pace, falling 21–19 21–13.
In Women’s Singles, Petra Maixnerová also pushed her opponent, Wen Yu Zhang, to three games. After taking the opening game, Maixnerová fought hard in the decider but eventually lost 16–21 in what was another encouraging performance for the Czech squad, but again didn't result in a win.
Despite ending the group stage without a win, Czechia can take pride in the level they brought against strong opposition. The fact that they were able to play their first Sudirman Cup is a feat in and of itself. For many of the players, these matches provided vital exposure on the world stage and set a crucial foundation for future team events.
Canada also exited the competition after earlier defeats to Korea and Chinese Taipei, who have both secured progression and will meet later today at 11:00 CEST to determine the group winner.
