The opening day of the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2026 has concluded, with six European nations in action and a mix of promising performances and tough defeats.
Ukraine Outclassed by China
The day began with Ukraine facing badminton powerhouse China. Despite a determined effort from the young Ukrainian side, the gap in level proved too large. China secured a dominant 5–0 victory without dropping a single set.
Ukraine will now turn their focus to upcoming clashes against Denmark and India.
Denmark Edge Crucial Tie Against India
In the second session, Denmark faced India in a tie that could prove decisive in the race for a quarterfinal spot.
The Danes delivered an impressive team performance, winning several tight matches to secure a 3–2 victory.
Denmark now faces a major test against China in their next tie.
France Fall Short Against Thailand
Also in action were the newly crowned European Men’s Team Champions, France. They opened their campaign against Thailand but were unable to match their opponents’ level.
Thailand claimed a convincing 4–1 win, with Toma Junior Popov securing the only point for France in the third men’s singles.
Spanish Women Overpowered by Korea
Spain’s women’s team faced a strong Korean side and struggled to keep pace. Korea sealed a comprehensive 5–0 victory.
Spain will next face Thailand before concluding their group stage against Bulgaria.
Thailand Triumph in Thriller Against Bulgaria
The evening session delivered one of the most exciting ties of the day, as Thailand and Bulgaria battled it out in a contest that went the full distance.
Thailand ultimately secured the win 3-2, but not before a standout performance from Bulgarian talent Kaloyana Nalbantova, who defeated former world champion Ratchanok Intanon in a three-game match.
Denmark Close the Day with a Win Over Korea
Denmark returned to court in the final tie of the day, facing Korea in what looked like a closely matched contest on paper.
However, the Danes proved superior, sealing an impressive 4–1 victory.
A highlight came in the first men’s doubles, where Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard defeated world champion and world number one Kim Won Ho, alongside world number 14 Ki Dong Ju, in straight games.
Looking Ahead to Day 2
More European teams will be in action tomorrow.
In the Uber Cup, Türkiye, Ukraine and Denmark will compete.
In the Thomas Cup, Sweden, England and Finland will take to the court.
Matches begin at 08:30.
