The Danish women have secured their place in the quarterfinals of the Uber Cup. This was confirmed after their 4–1 victory over Ukraine this evening, combined with China currently leading 3–0 against India.
In addition to winning their own tie, Denmark also needed China to defeat India in order to progress from the group.
Denmark did not get off to the best start, as Line Christophersen was defeated by the young Polina Buhrova in the first women’s singles. The match began as many would have expected, with Christophersen taking the opening game 21–12. However, Buhrova gradually found her rhythm, while unforced errors began to creep into Christophersen’s game. The Ukrainian won the second game 21–19, and in the deciding third game she controlled the match to secure victory 21–15.
From that point on, the Danish players proved too strong and went on to secure an overall 4–1 win.
Denmark were the only European nation to advance from the group stage today. This means we now say farewell to Türkiye, who ended their Uber Cup campaign with a 5–0 win over South Africa. We also say goodbye to the Finnish and English men’s teams, who lost 4–1 and 5–0 to Malaysia and Japan respectively. Neither team can progress ahead of their final group match, where the two European nations will face each other.
Tomorrow, Bulgaria and Spain will meet in the Uber Cup. Neither team can advance from the group, the match is scheduled for 10am.
In the evening session at 6pm France will face Indonesia in a crucial tie, where the French team must win at least 4–1 to secure progression.
