Today’s two women's singles finalists have both been close to the gold many times before at the European Championships, and Kirsty Gilmour has stood on the second-highest step of the podium several times without ever being able to feel the golden medal around her neck.
And today was no different for the sympathetic Scot. This time, her conqueror was the top-seeded Line Kjærsfeldt, who secured her first European Championships title.
The two followed each other closely until 16-16 in the first game, where Line Kjærsfeldt managed to pull away and take the set 21-16.
The second game started just as closely as the first, but earlier on Kjærsfeldt gained a lead and played at an impressively high pace while keeping her error rate to a minimum.
Although Kirsty tried to mount a comeback and came closer, she never managed to fully catch up. The match ended 21-16 21-17.
Congratulations to Line Kjærsfeldt on winning the title and also to Kirsty Gilmour for yet another strong performance.
