Frederik Søgaard and Rasmus Kjær produced a remarkable comeback to defeat eighth-seeded Indonesians Sabar Gutama and Moh Isfahani, winning 21-18, 18-21, 26-24.
The Danes looked to be in real trouble in the deciding game. After the interval, a poor run of points left them trailing 17-11. But Søgaard and Kjær fought their way back, leveling at 17-17, and from there the two pairs matched each other point for point all the way until the very end.
Reflecting on the turnaround, Rasmus Kjær said: “At that point (down 17-11) it was a bit of stubbornness — this is not how we want to go out. So we let go of some of the pressure, just decided to go for it, and got our feet going again.”
The Indonesians still had opportunities to close out the match, holding match points at 20-19 and 22-21. But in the end it was Søgaard and Kjær who seized their chance, erupting in celebration as they clinched victory.
Tomorrow brings another major test for the Danish duo, as they face the 11th seeds Chen/Liu from China, who earlier in the evening defeated the Czech pair Kral/Kral 21-7, 21-19.
