The YONEX Swiss Open 2026 began on Tuesday at the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, with a busy opening day featuring qualification rounds and the first main draw matches.

European players made their presence felt early, with several progressing to the main draw and one standout upset highlighting the day.

The big upset came late in the day in men’s doubles, where Eloi Adam/Léo Rossi  defeated the second seeded Kim Astrup/Anders Rasmussen 19-21 21-18 22-20. The victory marked a significant moment for the French European Championships silver medallists, who avenged their loss to the Danish pair in the final of the European Men’s and Women’s Team Championships earlier this month. Eliminating the former world number ones and second seeds represents one of the biggest wins of their careers so far.

Elsewhere in men’s doubles, Daniel Lundgaard/Mads Vestergaard advanced after edging Scotland’s Christopher Grimley/Matthew Grimley in a tight three-game encounter, 18-21 21-15 26-24.

The qualification rounds saw a strong European showing as well. Among those progressing were Julian Carraggi (Belgium), Kaloyana Nalbantova while Spain’s Rubén García/Lucía Rodríguez secured their place in the mixed doubles main draw.

In women’s doubles qualification, Debora Jille/Isabel Lohau moved through to the main draw. Lohau, who recently received a wildcard for the 2026 European Championships, continues to gain momentum ahead of the continental event next month.

The opening day also brought a few unusual moments, with several withdrawals affecting the qualification draw. One match involving Denmark’s William Boe/Andreas Søndergaard and compatriots Christian Faust Kjær/Rasmus Kjær was halted after the first game, with both pairs eventually progressing to the main draw.

With numerous Europeans advancing and several already competing in the round of 32, the stage is set for a strong continental presence as the tournament continues in Basel.
