European Stars Set for Singapore Open Challenge
26/05/26 08:24

The BWF World Tour moves from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore this week as the Singapore Open 2026 gets underway at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. As one of the biggest Super 750 tournaments on the calendar, the event promises a week of world-class badminton and valuable ranking points.

Europe arrives in Singapore with several genuine contenders looking to challenge for titles across multiple disciplines.

Among the leading European hopes is Denmark’s Anders Antonsen, who claimed the Thailand Open title two weeks ago. After taking a week off during the Malaysia Masters, the Dane returns refreshed and ready to compete for another deep run. He opens his campaign against Japan’s Yushi Tanaka.

The men's singles draw also features a strong European contingent including France’s Toma Junior Popov and Christo Popov, fellow Frenchman Alex Lanier, and Belgium’s Julien Carraggi.

Can Kjærsfeldt Continue Her Momentum?

Last week, European Championships silver medallist Line Kjærsfeldt produced her best World Tour result in a long time by reaching the semifinals at the Malaysia Masters. Her impressive run ended against former World Champion Ratchanok Intanon, who eventually went on to lift the title.

Now the Dane will look to build on that performance in Singapore, where she begins her campaign against Canada’s Michelle Li.

European Champion Kirsty Gilmour also returns to competition this week. The Scot has not played a tournament since winning the European Championships in April and faces a difficult opening-round test against none other than Intanon.

Also representing Europe in women's singles are Denmark’s Line Christophersen and Türkiye’s Neslihan Arin.

Several of Europe’s newly crowned champions are also back in action.

European Champions Ben Lane and Sean Vendy will play their first tournament since their triumph in Huelva. The English pair have spent the last six weeks focusing on training and preparation, making Singapore a good opportunity to gauge where they stand heading into the next phase of the season.

Fresh from the biggest title of their careers, Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard arrive in Singapore as Malaysia Masters champions. Their breakthrough Super 500 title last week significantly boosted their confidence, and it will be fascinating to see whether they can maintain that momentum at Super 750 level.

Also competing in men's doubles are the Czech Kral brothers and the French Popov brothers.

In mixed doubles, France’s fourth-seeded pair Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue return after not having played the last two tournaments. The French duo arrive in Singapore with fresh legs and hopes of another strong tournament.

Denmark’s Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Bøje are seeded sixth and continue their rise up the world rankings following an excellent beginning of the Asian leg. The Danish pair won the Thailand Open before reaching the semifinals in Malaysia.

Also in the mixed doubles draw are France’s Julien Maio and Léa Palermo, as well as Germany’s Marvin Seidel and Thuc Nguyen.

The women’s doubles draw also contains several interesting European stories.

Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva enter the tournament as eighth seeds after skipping the previous two weeks of competition in Asia.

Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova and Yevheniia Kantemyr have just exited the tournament following a three-game defeat in the opening round, while Spain’s Paula López and Lucía Rodríguez successfully came through their first-round match in three games.

Also competing are European Championships silver medallists Bengisu Erçetin and Nazlıcan İnci, who begin their tournament on Wednesday.

With several European champions returning to action, players carrying strong momentum from recent tournaments, and multiple genuine contenders across all five disciplines, there will be plenty of European interest throughout the week in Singapore.
