The first round of the main draw at the 2025 Yonex US Open was played last night, with many European players taking to the court and delivering some exciting results.

Among the many matches with European participation, there were a few surprising performances. Harry Huang from England managed to defeat former Denmark Open winner Kidambi Srikanth in a thrilling three-set match, winning 21-19, 12-21, 21-14 after almost an hour of intense play. In mixed doubles, the German duo Malik Bourakkadi/Leona Michalski caused an upset by beating the 8th-seeded Americans Chen Zhi Yi/Francesca Corbett 21-12, 25-23. It wasn’t the only victory for Germany in mixed doubles, as Marvin Seidel/Thuc Phuong Nguyen continued their good form, defeating Spain's Ruben Garcia/Lucia Rodriguez 21-17, 21-13.

Another highlight was BEC Young Player of the Year 2024, Kaloyana Nalbantova, who advanced to the next round with a strong comeback, winning 14-21, 21-19, 21-10 against Brazil's Juliana Viera.

While many European players successfully advanced to the next round, others saw their tournament end in the first round, including Magnus Johannesen, Joakim Oldorff, and Tereza Švabikova.

Looking ahead to today's matches, which start at 7 PM (CEST), several exciting encounters await. Marvin Seidel/Thuc Phuong Nguyen will face a tough challenge when they meet the 7th-seeded Canadian pair Lee/Wu. Another thrilling mixed doubles clash features the French duo Grégoire Deschamp/Margot Lambert taking on the 4th-seeded Estele Van Leeuwen/Callum Hemming from the UK. Additionally, the new Danish women’s doubles pair Natasja P. Anthonisen/Amalie Kudsk will face Hu Ling Fang/Jheng Yu Chieh from Chinese Taipei.

Best of luck to all European players, and we look forward to seeing more exciting badminton action at the US Open.
