Day one at the HYLO Open 2025 has kicked off, showcasing some exciting European action already.
Today featured the qualification rounds followed by the Women’s Doubles and Men’s Doubles Round of 32.
One of the highlights of the day came when crowd favourites Bjarne Geiss / Jones Jansen faced the young French pair Mael Cattoen / Lucas Renoir, who have enjoyed an amazing breakout year — reaching the quarterfinals at the European Championships and recently winning the YONEX Dutch Open 2025.
After taking the first game 21-15, the French looked in control, using their speed and athleticism to dictate the pace. However, the more experienced German duo fought back, taking the second game 22-20 and edging the decider 21-19 — much to the relief and joy of the home crowd, who celebrated their pair’s hard-fought victory. On Thursday, Geiss/Jansen will face the winners of the match between Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Nur Azriyn / Tan Wee Kiong.
Last year’s champions Ben Lane / Sean Vendy faced a tough challenge against Chiu Hsiang Chieh / Wang Chi-Lin, who managed to knock out the British pair, sending the defending champions home after just the opening round. This marks the final tournament of the season for Lane and Vendy — a year filled with ups and downs following an injury that sidelined them for much of it. Still, their Arctic Open triumph was a major highlight, as they claimed their most prestigious title yet. We can’t wait to see what 2026 has in store for them!
In Women’s Doubles, Natasja Anthonisen / Cecilie Kudsk met Swiss pair Lucie Amiguet / Caroline Racloz, who pushed the Danes to stay sharp throughout. The Swiss used their athletic power and determination to keep rallies alive and test the Danes’ patience and consistency. The second game was particularly tense, with the momentum swinging in the Swiss pair’s favour at several points before the Danes closed it out 21-11 21-19.
The Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, and Mixed Doubles matches will all be played tomorrow, with returning champions Christo Popov, Mia Blichfeldt, and Jesper Toft / Amalie Magelund all in action. The day will kick off with a must-watch clash between Lakshya Sen and Christo Popov.
