Julie Dawall Jakobsen, Line Christophersen, and Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje all came out successful in their first round matches today at the SANDS CHINA LTD Macau Open 2025. However, it was the end of the road for the rest of the European contenders who were still in the race.
Jakobsen, two-time European Championships bronze medallist, faced India’s Unnati Hooda, ranked four spots above her and fresh off a quarterfinal run at the China Open, where she defeated P. V. Sindhu. Jakobsen started strong in the first game, but Hooda caught up before the mid-game break and pulled ahead to take it 21-16.
The Indian player continued leading for most of the second game, keeping mostly a two-point advantage until Jakobsen fought back near the end, catching up at 18-18 and saving the match to force a decider. The final game had momentum shifts but Jakobsen took control towards the closing, to win 21-17. She will next face Japan’s Hina Akechi, an opponent she’s never met before.
Line Christophersen had a very successful match against third-seeded Chiu Pin-Chan from Chinese Taipei, despite the 15-place gap between them in the rankings. This was their third encounter, and Christophersen’s third victory.
In the next round, she will face Wu Luo Yu, ranked 53rd in the world, 20 places below Christophersen’s current position at 33. A great opportunity for her to advance to the quarterfinals.
Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje continued their positive run. Yesterday, they claimed their first win since returning from a one-year break—though it came in the qualification round. Today, they followed up with their first main draw victory.
Tomorrow, they will take on the third-seeded Malaysian pair Hoo Pang Ron/Cheng Su Yin.
