After yesterday’s round of 16, only three Danish players/pairs remained from the European side: Julie Dawall Jakobsen, Line Christophersen, and Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje.
Julie Dawall Jakobsen
The first Dane to step on court was Julie Dawall Jakobsen. She played a familiar face, 20-year-old Hina Akechi from Japan. The two had faced each other in the quarterfinals of the Swedish Open in 2023. At that time, it was Akechi who took the victory 21-19 21-15 (and went on to win the entire tournament). Today it was a similar story, as the 20-year-old bested Julie Dawall Jakobsen 21-16 21-18, making it to the quarterfinals and eliminating the Dane.
Christophersen vs Akechi
Akechi will share the court with another familiar Danish face tomorrow: Line Christophersen, who did her own part today in securing a place in the quarterfinals of the Macau Open. She defeated China’s Wu Luo Yu, who is 20 spots behind her in the world ranking, in confident fashion 21-10 21-16.
Facing Akechi, however, will be a whole other challenge. The two played earlier this year in the round of 16 at the German Open, where Akechi beat Christophersen in straight games 21-14 21-13. With Akechi’s second defeat of Julie Dawall Jakobsen today, it seems like a tough hill to climb tomorrow. If one looks at their rankings, however, it paints a different picture. Christophersen is placed comfortably 34 places above Akechi in the world rankings. That is largely because of her experience. Christophersen has a career win-loss record of 174 wins and 104 losses. Akechi has a stronger 81 wins and 18 losses. That means for every loss, Akechi has 4.5 victories, while Christophersen averages only 1.67. It will be tough for Christophersen to beat the odds, but a victory would be a huge step for her career.
Christiansen/Bøje comeback-run continues!
Lastly, it was Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje. They have truly proved that they are back in winning shape, as today they defeated third-seeded Malaysian pair Hoo Pang Ron/Cheng Su Yin to advance to the quarterfinals of their second tournament this year. A great step in their comeback process. Tomorrow they will face Yuta Watanabe/Hina Osawa.
