The World Championships are never short of early round surprises. On day one, fourth seed Li Shi Feng saw his campaign come to an abrupt end after losing to Japan’s Tanaka. And today, another upset unfolded – this time with a European twist. Azerbaijan’s Ade Resky Dwicacho stunned Japan’s Koki Watanabe with a straight-games victory, 21-19, 21-18. Watanabe currently sits at No. 19 in the world rankings, while Ade Resky is currently down at No. 91.
A delighted Ade Resky was happy for his own performance after the match. While admitting the result was unexpected, even for him, he never doubted his chances completely. “I always believe in myself,” he said with a smile.
The road ahead, however, only gets tougher. In the second round, Ade Resky will face Indonesia’s Jonathan Christie. Still, the Azerbaijani is embracing the challenge. “I would say it is a good match for me. We’ve never played each other in a tournament before… I’m happy to face him in such a big event.”
