For the first time in their careers, 32-year-old Mathias Christiansen and 26-year-old Alexandra Bøje have won the European Championships title.

The Danish pair entered the tournament as the second seeds and have performed at a consistently high level throughout the week. Their strong form was reflected in the fact that they did not drop a single game during the championships.

The same was true in today’s final, where the Danes faced one of the standout stories of this year’s European Championships: Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen from England. The English pair had impressed throughout the tournament, notably defeating top seeds Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue as well as the reigning European champions Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund.

The final proved to be a close contest. The Danish pair led throughout the first game but were never able to pull decisively away. They reached four game points at 20–16, but the English duo fought back to 20–19, coming within a single shuttle of leveling at 20–20. However, the Danes held their nerve to take the opening game 21–19.

The pattern continued in the second game, with the Danes leading throughout without fully breaking away. At the mid-game interval, the score was 11–10, but from there the Danes gained momentum and gradually pulled clear of their opponents. They eventually sealed the match 21–14 and could raise their arms in celebration.

It marks the first European Championships title for the Danish pair, who were naturally delighted after the match.

Alexandra Bøje "There were a lot of nerves. I think Callum and Estelle played a really, really good match today, so it was a tough win—but we are extremely happy and proud to be the winners."

This is Mathias Christiansen’s sixth medal at the European Championships, but his first gold.

Congratulations to Mathias Christiansen & Alexandra Bøje, as well as Badminton Denmark.
