New scoring system - 3 x 15
25/04/26 17:37

The member associations of the Badminton World Federation have voted to approve the adoption of a new 3×15 scoring system at the 87th BWF Annual General Meeting. The proposal secured the required two-thirds majority of votes cast, marking a significant change to the sport’s format at the highest level.

Under the 3×15 system, matches will be played as best of three games to 15 points, rather than 21. The change is expected to shorten match duration and create a faster-paced and more intense playing experience. The intention behind the new system is to create more decisive rallies and increase the unpredictability of matches, ultimately making the sport more dynamic and engaging for a global audience.

The decision follows ongoing discussions within the badminton community about how to modernise the sport and enhance its appeal for players, spectators and broadcasters.

Badminton Europe was among the supporters of the proposal. President Sven Serré emphasised the importance of adapting the sport to maintain its global relevance:

“BEC supported the 3x15 scoring as it was mandatory to maintain our sport at the global level. Our players will adapt quickly, the game will be quicker and more decisive! I’m eager to see this new scoring running.”

The new scoring system will come into effect on Monday 4 January 2027, replacing the current 3×21 format that has been in place since 2006.
