The first women’s matches have just concluded, and while the top-seeded Danes and the hosts Türkiye were dominant in their opening tie, the other encounters delivered several close and very entertaining battles.
Denmark secured a 5–0 victory over Ukraine in a tie where only the first women’s doubles proved truly tight. Vang/Werge edged out Buhrova/Stoliarenko 21–19 in the third set to seal the match and complete a clean Danish sweep.
Hosts Türkiye also recorded a 5–0 win in their opening tie against Czechia, to big applause from the host crowd.
In Group 1, Germany faced Estonia, who are competing at the Championships for the very first time. Estonia delivered a fantastic performance and got off to a strong start as Kristin Kuuba won the first women’s singles against Miranda Wilson. The German team responded well, turning a 0–1 deficit into a 3–1 lead to secure the overall victory. Estonia managed to reduce the score to 2–3 in the final match, capping an impressive effort in their debut appearance.
Second-seeded Bulgaria took on France in another competitive tie. Three tight singles matches were played, but all went in Bulgaria’s favour. Bulgaria, home to Europe’s top women’s doubles pair, chose to split up the Stoeva sisters. Gabriela Stoeva partnered Kaloyana Nalbantova in the first women’s doubles, while Stefani Stoeva teamed up with Gergana Pavlova in the second doubles. In the first doubles, however, the strong French pair Camille Pognante and Margot Lambert claimed victory in a close contest. That proved to be France’s only win of the tie, as Bulgaria secured a 4–1 victory in their opening match.
