Denmark’s women saw their Uber Cup campaign come to an end with a 3–1 defeat to Indonesia in the quarterfinals, bringing their hopes of a medal to a close.
After strong group stage victories over Ukraine (4–1) and India (3–2), Denmark advanced to the knockout stage as runners-up behind China. That result placed them in a draw against one of the other group winners, where they were matched with Indonesia.
Indonesia made the stronger start in today’s tie, as their top singles player Wardani, ranked world number six, defeated Line Christophersen 21–12, 21–15. Denmark responded well, with European silver medalist Line Kjærsfeldt securing a solid 21–15, 21–16 win over Pratiwi to level the tie.
In the first women’s doubles, Indonesia regained the lead as Kusuma and Puspitasari overcame Werge and Kudsk 21–19, 21–11.
That left Amalie Schulz needing a win to keep Denmark’s hopes alive. Despite a determined effort from the young Dane, it was 20-year-old Ester Wardoyo who sealed the victory for Indonesia, securing a 3–1 overall win and a place in the semifinals for her nation.
Despite the result, Denmark can look back on several strong performances throughout this year’s Uber Cup.
While there will be no European medals in this year’s Uber Cup, there are still two opportunities for success in the Thomas Cup quarterfinals tomorrow evening. France will face Japan, while Denmark take on Thailand, with both ties scheduled for 18:00 CET.
