We’ve reached the quarterfinal stage of this year’s Super 300 event – YONEX US Open – and as matches begin later today at 10 PM (CEST), a strong European presence will be felt on court. Thursday's matches brought a mix of heartbreak and celebration for European players, but we now look ahead to nine exciting quarterfinal matchups featuring European athletes, including one all-European clash.

All-European duel in women’s singles

One of the most anticipated matches will see Bulgaria’s rising star Kaloyana Nalbantova take on Denmark’s Line Christophersen. Nalbantova has impressed throughout the tournament, and last night she defeated Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching in a hard-fought battle. Christophersen, seeded 6th, has shown strong and consistent form so far and will go into this quarter-final as the favourite. It will be the first ever meeting between these two young and talented players.

But they’re not the only European women’s singles players still standing. Germany’s Yvonne Li has also booked her place in the quarterfinals and now faces a major challenge against home favourite and top seed Beiwen Zhang. Zhang leads their head-to-head 3-0, but Li will be aiming to turn the tide.

Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova, recently named BEC Fan Player of the Year 2025, also advanced and will meet the 3rd seed Sung Shuo Yun from Chinese Taipei in what promises to be an intense clash.

Mixed doubles: Europeans in all four quarterfinals

It’s a strong showing for Europe in mixed doubles, with representation in all four quarterfinals.

Rasmus Espersen and Amalie Kudsk of Denmark, seeded 5th, will face Lin Yu Chieh and Hung Yu-En from Chinese Taipei, the pair that knocked out the top seeds in round one.

Marvin Seidel and Thuc Phuong Nguyen from Germany continue to impress in their first Super Series tournament together, having taken down the 7th-seeded Canadian pair Kevin Lee and Josephine Wu in a three-game battle.

Another German duo, Malik Bourakkadi and Leona Michalski, are also through after eliminating the 8th seeds. They now face the 2nd-seeded Thai pair Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat.

England’s young pairing Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen are into the quarterfinals after defeating the French pair Grégoire Deschamp and Margot Lambert in straight games. Next, they face the American 6th seeds Presley Smith and Jennie Gai.

Men’s doubles and singles highlights

In men’s doubles, the new Danish combination of Andreas Søndergaard and Rasmus Espersen has reached the quarterfinals in their first tournament together. They will face Chen Cheng Kuan and Lin Bing-Wei from Chinese Taipei, who yesterday knocked out the Grimley brothers in three close games.

England’s Harry Huang is the last European standing in men’s singles. After his impressive win over former Denmark Open champion Kidambi Srikanth in the first round, Huang followed it up with a victory against Le Duc Phat from Hong Kong. He now faces the 3rd seed Brian Yang from Canada in a high-stakes quarterfinal.

It’s shaping up to be a thrilling day of badminton action in Iowa, as European players aim to secure their spots in the semifinals of the US Open 2025.
