The quarterfinals marked the end of the road for reigning European champion Alex Lanier, who has just lost a marathon match lasting 1 hour and 16 minutes against his compatriot Arnaud Merkle.
In a tight contest that swung back and forth and could have gone either way, it was Merkle who kept his composure in the final moments. He secured the victory 17–21, 21–19, 21–18.
After the match, a frustrated Lanier reflected on his performance:
"It could have been better. It’s a bit frustrating, but at the same time I feel like I gave everything today. I couldn’t change my game, I couldn’t be better, and that’s how it is sometimes."
Despite the disappointment, the reigning champion still found time to praise his teammate:
"He played well, he deserved the win. Also tactically he played better than me. He definitely deserves this."
Merkle, on the other hand, was delighted with his performance:
"I am super happy. I knew I needed to show my A-game, and I am very proud of the way I did it."
In tomorrow’s semifinal, Arnaud Merkle will face either Nhat Nguyen or Anders Antonsen, who play later today at 16:00.
