On Day 2 of the YONEX Canada Open 2025, European players delivered strong performances with many progressing to the Round of 16. One of the standout moments came from Spain’s mixed doubles duo, Lucia Rodriguez and Ruben Garcia.
Mixed doubles
The Spanish pair came to court with a lot to prove. While they lifted the Austrian Open 2025 title earlier this season on the European Circuit, they were still seeking a breakthrough at the World Tour level. Facing the top seeds, India’s Dhruv Kapila/Tanisha Crasto, ranked 18th in the world, it seemed like another early exit might be looming. But Rodriguez/Garcia had other plans.
They defeated the top seeds in straight games. This upset is a big win for the pair and it also means they now take over the first seeds’ lane in the draw, making their route to a potential final more accessible.
Next up for the Spaniards is an all-European clash against Denmark’s Kristoffer Kolding/Mette Werge, who are just eight places below them in the world rankings.
A possible opponent in the quarterfinals could be a new Dutch pairing, European bronze medallist Deborah Jille teamed up with fellow Dutch player Brian Wassink. First, however, they’ll need to overcome the sixth seeds, Presley Smith/Jennie Gai from Malaysia. If they succeed, an all-European quarterfinal could be on the cards.
Elsewhere in mixed doubles, Marvin Seidel/Thuc Nguyen and Callum Hemming/Estelle Van Leeuwen have also reached the Round of 16, keeping European hopes high in the category.
Men’s wingles
In men’s singles, Joakim Oldorff, Matthias Kicklitz, and Arnaud Merkle are carrying the European flag. Oldorff has the toughest challenge as he faces Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, the tournament’s third seed, behind Kodai Naraoka and Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen.
Women’s singles
A standout match to watch in women’s singles features European Junior Champion Kaloyana Nalbantova taking on Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara. This is their first-ever meeting, and it promises to be an exciting encounter.
Denmark’s Amalie Schulz and Spain’s Clara Azurmendi are also still in the competition and have exciting matches that can also be watched today.
Men’s doubles
Men’s doubles is the most European-heavy category at this stage, with six of the remaining 16 pairs from Europe. These include Boe/Kjær, Cattoen/Renoir, Guildea/Reynolds, Maio/Villeger, Easton/Green, and Grimley/Grimley. A strong medal chance lies here for Europe and we will keep an eye out in this category.
Women’s doubles
Four European pairs remain in the women’s doubles competition. Former European Champion Margot Lambert and European Junior Champion Camille Pognante take on the eighth-seeded Japanese pair Kaho Osawa/Mai Tanabe in what should be an exciting match.
Fourth-seeded Ukrainians Polina Buhrova/Yevheniaa Kantemyr face Americans Lauren Lam/Allison Lee, a match the Ukrainians hopefully will take in a comfortable fashion.
Mette Werge, also competing in mixed doubles, continues in women’s doubles alongside Kathrine Vang. They meet the eighth-seeded Canadian duo Jackie Dent/Crystal Lai.
Lastly, England's Abbygael Harris/Lizzie Tolman take on the second-seeded pair from Chinese Taipei, Chang Chin Hui/Tang Chun Tun. The Taipei pair eliminated fellow English duo Estelle Van Leeuwen/Annie Lado in the opening round, so Harris/Tolman will be aiming to avenge that loss and keep English hopes alive.
As we can see, Europe is represented in all five categories, with that come high expectations and a lot to look out for. We are excited for the third day of badminton in Canada starting today at 11am local time.
