Not since 1984 have we seen a player reach the finals in both men's singles and men's doubles at a European Championships. Back then it was Denmark's Morten Frost and Jens Peter Nierhoff who faced each other in the singles final while also finishing runners up together in men's doubles. But new history has now been written at this year's championships as Toma Junior Popov has fought his way into both the men's singles final and the men's doubles final alongside his younger brother Christo Popov.
And regardless of the outcomes in the two matches we already know the French anthem will be heard from the top of the podium. In the men's singles final Toma Popov will take on young rising star Alex Lanier while in doubles the Popov brothers will face surprise finalists and fellow countrymen Eloi Adam and Leo Rossi.
Even before the last three finals are played this already marks the best ever European Championships for France with two golds three silvers and three bronze medals. A truly impressive achievement by the entire French team.
Today three finals will be played two of which are all French affairs. In the last final Denmark's Line Kjærsfeldt faces Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour. It is Kjærsfeldt's first European Championships final while Gilmour has already been in five without ever taking the title. Four times she was stopped by the dominant Carolina Marin and once by Mia Blichfeldt. Let us see if today will finally be Gilmour's golden moment.
