The second day of the 2026 European Championships in Huelva brought a mix of early upsets and strong performances from some of the top names.

There was little time before the first surprises arrived. French topseeds Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue were among the early casualties, falling to Callum Hemming/Estelle Van Leeuwen. This result set the tone for a day where some of the best names were tested from the get-go. Link

Another upset followed early in the morning with Scot Callum Smith defeating 2024 European Championships medallist Joakim Oldorff. England’s Alex Green/Zach Russ also made a strong statement defeating sixth seeds Mael Cattoen/Lucas Renoir in straight games.

French pair Eloi Adam/Leo Rossi are out after a tough three-game match against Germany’s Bjarne Geiss/Jones Ralfy Jansen. The Germans celebrated an emotional win after a close clash.

While some seeds fell, others top players had more control in their first matches. Vivien Sandorhazi, bronze medallist in 2025, has kicked off her run in Huelva with a solid win against Sweden’s Cecilia Wang in straight games. Having played club matches for the team here in Huelva, the Hungarian said after the match that returning to the city felt like coming home, adding to an even more positive feeling on court.

In mixed doubles, third seeds Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund got through their opening match. The tournament will be their final appearance as a pair at least for the time being due to Magelund’s pregnancy, adding extra significance to their run this week.

Another Danish pair, second seeds Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje, also gave a good performance. They ended the hopes of Spaniards Ruben Garcia/Lucia Rodriguez, who were among the home favourites to make it far this week.

With surprises from early on, the European Championships in Huelva are already showing that this edition will be highly competitive – they’re all here to win.
