The first of two BWF World Tour tournaments on American soil this summer, the YONEX US Open 2025, concluded yesterday in Iowa with a solid result for the Europeans, finishing with three medals, including a gold for Rasmus Espersen/Amalie Cecilie Kudsk – their first World Tour title together.

Polina Buhrova and Line Christophersen also achieved a podium finish, each securing a bronze in women’s singles.

Chinese Taipei were the big winners, taking home a whopping ten medals. Not a bad result for the hosts either, with Beiwen Zhang winning the women’s singles title and Presley Smith/Jennie Gai securing a bronze in mixed doubles.

In women’s singles, there was a sad feeling for European fans because Kaloyana Nalbantova and Line Christophersen had to meet in the quarterfinals, two Europeans battling for just one spot in the semifinals. Christophersen was the one who prevailed, seeded sixth, she had a good run but fell to top seed and home favourite Beiwen Zhang in three games, still securing a well-earned bronze. Polina Buhrova, seeded seventh, had standout performances too, taking out third seed Sung Shuo Yun in the quarterfinals before losing to Tanvi Sharma, who finished as runner-up here and also won the Denmark Challenge a month ago on the European Circuit.

In men’s singles, Harry Huang made it to the quarterfinals but lost to third seed Brian Yang. In doubles, it was a tough finish for Callum Hemming/Estelle Van Leeuwen, seeded fourth, and Marvin Seidel/Thuc Phuong Nguyen, both pairs bowing out in the quarterfinals.

But the big European story came from Rasmus Espersen/Amalie Cecilie Kudsk. The Danish pair powered through a tricky opening match in three games against Tsai Fu Cheng/Sung Yu-Hsuan, then went on to win their next matches in straight games, including a semifinal win over higher seeds Chen Cheng Kuan/Hsu Yin-Hui. In the final, they faced Thailand’s Ruttanapak Oupthong/Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat, going into a decider but closing it off confidently, 21-17, 13-21, 21-10. This was a huge moment, as it is their first ever Super 300 title.

Next up is the Canada Open, starting tomorrow already, where many of the Europeans continue their run in this American leg of the tour. You can check the draws here.
