The first round came to an end today at the SUWON VICTOR Korea Open 2025. It was not an easy day for Europe.
Most of the European players showed their fighting spirit but were unable to turn that into wins. Czechia’s Tereza Švábíková lost both in women’s singles and mixed doubles partnered with Ondřej Král, while Germany’s Calvin Devereux/Desiree Toepffer and Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen also lost.
Ukraine’s Polina Buhrova had a good performance against Thailand’s sixth seed Supanida Katethong, losing 19-21 16-21. Dane Magnus Johannesen also fought hard in his match against Chou Tien Chen, pushing in the opening game but eventually saying goodbye to the tournament, 21-23 14-21.
Nevertheless, there were wins to celebrate. Mathias Christiansen/Alexandra Bøje continue their comeback with a great victory against Korea’s Lee Sang Won/Kim Min Ji. The Danes won the first game confidently, 21-13, and had a close second game, 22-20. Tomorrow, they will face the eighth-seeded Indonesian pair, Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu, in what will surely be a harder test.
Top seed Anders Antonsen also had a confident start, defeating Korea’s Yoo Tae Bin in straight games. The Dane will meet Malaysia’s Justin Hoh in tomorrow’s second round. Even though it’s their first encounter, Antonsen has the experience.
