The second day of the PETRONAS Malaysia Open 2026 saw a clash between two of the brightest young men’s singles stars.

Both just 20 years old, Lanier entered the first-round clash in this Super 1000 event as the seventh seed and is currently inside the world’s top 10, while Farhan (ranked 17) continues to show that he also belongs among the best. Two players of the same generation who push established names and deliver results at the highest level, such as in this tournament.

Their last meeting had ended in disappointment for Lanier, with Farhan knocking Lanier out in the first round of the French Open on home soil last year. Today, the rematch turned into a one-hour, three-game match.

Lanier mentioned the windy conditions in Kuala Lumpur, pointing out that one side of the court was more difficult to play on. He also credited Farhan’s game, but noticed that the Indonesian was struggling physically as the match went on. “It was definitely a bit too much for him. That’s when I tried to also accelerate quite a bit.”

It was another strong chapter in what could become a rivalry to watch. This was their fourth meeting, and Lanier is sure there will be many more to come. “Everyone knows that we're going to have so many matches like this,” he said. “I'm progressing, I'm getting better, but he's also definitely getting better.”

Already looking forward to meeting Farhan again, Lanier added with a smile: “We're going to meet again in the final stage, I'm actually sure.”

Other European wins of the day
Jesper Toft/Amalie Magelund faced fellow Europeans Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue, the fifth seeds. The French pair were still looking for their first win against the Danes but that record remains as it is for now, with Toft/Magelund claiming their fourth straight win in the head-to-head.

Nhat Nguyen also had a strong opening match, overcoming a tough opponent who’s similar in level. The Irish player and Canada’s Brian Yang ended in a straight-games win to Nguyen, 21-8 21-19.
